Target Group

The Diploma in Teaching English as a Second Language conducted by the National Institute of Education is a one-year, full time, in-service training course designed to meet the requirement of professional updating and retraining of senior English teachers, In-service advisors and other English teacher educators and Education officers of English.

Objectives

  • To enable participants to understand various approaches to second language teaching.
  • To bring participants up to date with significant developments in applied linguistics and related fields relevant to the teaching and learning of English in Sri Lanka.
  • To assist participants in the construction of a conceptual framework for language teaching and learning, in order to relate and evaluate the pedagogical procedures and practice they encounter.
  • To provide participants with the skills and techniques essential for language teachers and trainers in the successful implementation of language policies in Sri Lanka.

Eligibility

Applicants should be either English-trained teachers/English medium graduates/graduates with English as a degree subject/graduated who have passed in English at the Advanced Level examination

and

have at least 5 years’ experience in the teaching of English as a second language after training or graduation.

Applicants will be selected on the basis of a selection test and an interview.

Regional and ethnic representation will be considered in the selection.

Programme Structure

The course will be divided into four major elements known as:

  1. Core component
  2. Elective Component
  3. Practice Teaching
  4. Individual Project

A compulsory study skills course will run throughout the course.

The course modes will include lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops and group sessions. Practical and practice teaching will include micro teaching and field observation visits. There will be self access periods each day when participants will be expected to use the print and non print resources. The rules for Library use and loans will be explained by Librarian.

Entrance Exam/Test Fee: Rupees 0.00

Registration Fee: Rupees 1,000.00

Programme Fee: Rupees 30,000.00 in 2 Instalment(s).

Examination Fees: In addition candidates have to pay examination fees when appling examinations.
